Lambton is mainly concerned with the social and economic aspects of the practice of irrigation in relation to Islamic law, and she includes discussion of relevant medieval Persian works. In an earlier article, “The Regulation of the Waters of the Zāyande Rūd,” BSOS 9, 1937-39, pp. 663-73, she discusses the major riverine system on the plateau in relation to a description of it in a medieval text. This is a study of land tenure and rural organization in Persia before the land reforms of 1962-6. The work provides an outline of the history of land tenure and land revenue administration from Islamic times down to the Iranian Constitutional Revolution in 1906 which brought an end to the medieval system of land tenure. It also examines the Pahlavi periods, and covers topics such as legal codes, irrigation, large landlords, peasant proprietors, share-cropping arrangements, agricultural methods and standards of living (Éditeur).
