The term “ethnicity” was, according to the Oxford English Dictionary obsolete and rare and meant heathendom or heathen superstition. This was the usage when the Dictionary was being compiled at the end of the last century. The situation is quite different now. The Supplement to the O.E.D. published in 1972 now recorded “ethnicity” as meaning ethnic character or peculiarity, and the adjective “ethnic” itself is also now recorded as meaning (which it did not mean when the O.E.D. was published) that which pertains to or has common racial, cultural, religious or linguistic characteristics, especially—the Supplement adds—designating a racial or other group within a large system (Elie Kedourie, extrait de sa contribution à l'ouvrage) |
